RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION (2007)
From the start, this trailer uses quick cutting camera shots to create suspense and excitement within the audience. These quick-fire reveal small snippets of the story in order for the audience to be able to follow the plot easily. The editing then slows down to reveal the main protagonist in the story, and her involvement within the film. The genre of the film is not entirely clear from the start of the trailer, and would seem to show that it is more of a action thriller; until the introduction of zombies around a third of the way through. Zombies are a typical convention of horror and therefore the genre becomes clear.
This film has quality camera work, settings and special effects which leads me to believe it had a fairly high production value. This quality would clearly be enticing for an audience who see the trailer.
The idea of apocalypse and 'impending doom' plays a major part in creating the aura of excitement within this trailer, and audiences who enjoy end of the world horrors would clearly be attracted to the movie by this trailer.
Resident Evil: Extinction places the audience in the shoes of a character within the movie. During the trailer the voice over speaks of the apocalypse and often speaks towards the cameras saying things like "We survived". I think that this involves the audience in the trailer. The trailer features diegetic dialogue from various scenes but also uses non diegetic voice overs from the main protagonist within the movie. These voice overs talk about the titles of previous films in the Resident Evil series and tries to entice us into seeing the new one. Also, the trailer leaves us in suspense, making the viewer more involved and wanting to find out what happens at the end of the film.
This trailer features many different conventions of the horror genre and uses them to good effect.
The settings shown within the trailer are either set in a clean laboratory type setting or a desolate abandoned type setting, both of which are often used within the genre. There is classic use of camerawork, such as in one scene where the monster is not seen emerging in the background and sneaks up behind a character.
DEAD SNOW (2009)
Dead Snow is a horror movie made in Norway about the rise of Nazi zombies. Although it is a horror, it does possess humorous qualities due to the camera shots, editing and music. The trailer clearly indicates the genre of the movie due to it possessing typical conventions of the horror genre; for example the zombies and classic gore scenes. The production value of this movie seems to be fairly low, and you can notice this within the quality of the trailer. It seems to be a bit of an indie movie, I cannot recognised any famous or well known actors in it.
The trailer uses a mixture of dialogue (obviously in Norwegian) and this attempts to build some basic back story.
HIDE AND SEEK
The Hide and Seek uses main characters within the trailer in order to reveal story, therefore drawing the audience in. the trailer has some recognisable stars within in which indicate the movie had a fairly large budget, and from this you can notice the quality within it.
It uses a scene between the main two characters where they discuss the young girl protagonists. The trailer uses some classic conventions of the horror genre such as playing with the idea of childhood innocence and imaginary friends. The movie achieves the horror within this by framing the innocence in a scary, mystical fashion.
Throughout the trailer, editing is used to build suspense. The young girl actor is key in the suspense building, her "cute" nature contradicts the horror genre but because of this seems to aid the creepiness of her part. Near the end of the trailer the editing becomes increasingly quick and the feel because disorientating and frantic, this is aided through the use of steep camera angles and the use of or lack of light. The end of the trailer uses a voice over some information screens to end the trailer in a creepy way.
The settings in this movie are classic of the horror genre, it is mostly shown to be based in a family home. The innocence of this makes the horror within the trailer seem out of place but this seems to make it more suitable.
